This industry has come so far in recent years that it would be a mistake not to recognize the collective achievements. Total distributor sales now exceed revenue levels of the dot-com/Y2K apex. Despite past predictions of distribution’s demise at the hand of Internet start-ups, today the industry’s e-business advances and online transaction volumes define distributors as online business leaders. The direct model (once heralded as the future) has been quieted by a new reality.
“Most tech product makers have learned that it isn't cost-effective for them to sell directly to SMB customers,” a recent Investors Business Daily article observed. Consequently, more than 200 additional vendors do business with GTDC members compared to two years ago. Selling, general and administrative expenses are at all-time lows as a percentage of sales, reflecting the incredible efficiency gains across the industry.
Compelling new service offerings, innovative thinking and proactive partnerships characterize today’s IT distributors. An industry that transforms with the times, regardless of what happened yesterday or takes place tomorrow.
